I flipped means old anime... And found this treasure. Anime "Future War 198Xigr"(1982) is a little-known but very interesting Japanese feature film that combines military drama, political fiction and the vibe of the nuclear apocalypse. Created in the wake of fear of the Third World, this anime warns: the world may burn not out of evil, but out of indecision, technocracy and complacency.
Being in the context of war, this anime is quite interesting to watch. Now there are generally few titles that can hold the attention of Ukrainians. So let's go:
Synopsis
The film shows a world slowly sliding into global conflict. Tensions between the West and the East are rising.
Sabotage, random provocations, local wars — and gradually nuclear missiles take off. The confrontation between the USSR and the USA eventually breaks out of the diplomatic framework. The viewer watches the final phase - the destruction of big cities, chaos and loss of humanity.
Although the film was created during the Cold War era, today it sounds in a new way - especially for the Ukrainian audience. the Russian-Ukrainian war became a real example of how autocracy uses nuclear rhetoric to terrorize the world.
In "198X" you can see how world leaders do not believe that war is real for a long time. They delay, wait, hope for "peace through diplomacy", even when cities are already falling. This resonates greatly with how the West responded in 2014, or in the first months of a full-scale invasion in 2022.We are already very familiar with many propaganda statements.
The film depicts both presidents - the USA and the USSR - as people bound by their own system, pressure from generals and fear of weakness. They don't push buttons because of cruelty - they hesitate, delegate, lose control. And coup attempts, the human factor, etc...
The American president does not believe in a threat for a long time, hopes for deterrence. His decisions are late. The Soviet leader also does not see a way out when the system is already launched.
This is a grim warning: if the leadership does not have the will to act decisively — the weapon wins, not the mind.
In short, this is anime, not so much fiction. But I personally was interested in hearing and seeing all these narratives in anime 80s. They also show a lot of weapons that we already know about from the news (and unfortunately, not only from the news). After watching it feel like listening to /watched Chmut and Sternenko's podcast about potential threats and the latest news. The only nuance is the map of the division of the world in the 80s and NATO is attacked from the territory of Poland (joined NATO on March 12, 1999).
Trailer
There is Ukrainian dubbing on the network. But I didn't find the trailer. So keep what is:
