Pregnancy planning — is not only a moment of hope and expectation, but also an important stage in checking a woman's health. One of the key organs that doctors pay attention to is the cervix, in particular its internal passage — cervical canal. His condition directly affects the ability to conceive, bear and give birth to a healthy child.
The cervical canal should be free, elastic and devoid of inflammatory processes or pathological changes. Its examination allows you to detect infections, erosions, dysplasias, anatomical narrowing or excessive mucus —, all of which can prevent fertilization or increase the risk of complications during pregnancy. In Ukraine, there are enough opportunities to undergo a comprehensive diagnosis in preparation for pregnancy, taking into account regional standards and modern laboratory approaches —, for example, within the western regions, you can contact the Esculab laboratory.
Diagnostic methods: how the cervix is checked
During pregnancy planning, doctors prescribe a number of studies to ensure the anatomical and functional norm of the cervix and cervical canal:
View in mirrors. This is a basic method in which the doctor assesses the condition of the mucous membrane, detects possible erosions, polyps or other formations. The review helps identify the need for more research.
Cytological examination (PAP test). Collection of cells from the cervical canal makes it possible to detect atypical changes, precancerous conditions or the consequences of chronic infections.
Colposcopy. A special microscope is used for a detailed examination of the cervix, in particular its vascular pattern. Increases the accuracy of detection of pathologies.
Pelvic ultrasound. Helps to assess cervical structure, cervical canal length, presence of polyps, cysts or signs of inflammation.
Laboratory analyzes. Include smear studies on flora, PCR analyses on STIs (chlamydia, HPV, herpes, etc.), as well as bacpos on opportunistic flora.
A comprehensive examination helps to identify in advance factors that may affect the ability to conceive or the safety of pregnancy.
What else is taken into account during the evaluation of the cervix
In addition to standard instrumental methods, an important role is played by the correct interpretation of the functional state of the cervical canal:
changes in mucus structure — it should be sufficiently viscous and transparent;
presence of chronic inflammation;
hormonal background;
detection of HPV (human papillomavirus);
previously performed surgical interventions.
When planning a pregnancy, a woman can only assess the general state of her reproductive health, but also prevent complications that can occur in the case of undetected cervical pathologies.
