Who is a mangaka?

Mangaka is a Japanese artist (and writer) who creates manga, a form of comics or graphic novels that is popular in Japan and beyond. The works of mangaka can range from short stories to extensive series. Mangaka work at a professional level.

Anyone can become a mangaka, but like any profession, it requires practice in drawing and storytelling. Many mangaka start as assistants to already established artists, learning the craft before creating their own works. It is also worth noting the term - doujinshi (self-published manga). Through self-publishing, many people begin their path to a professional (commercial) career as a mangaka.

There are cases where people from outside Japan have become successful mangaka. When they mastered the Japanese language and culture, it gave them a chance in the industry. However, some believe that true mangaka are Japanese (or born in Japan) because they understand the culture, aesthetics, and language more deeply.
