What is misogyny?

Misogyny is the hatred or disdain for women. Although this phenomenon has existed for centuries, the term "misogyny" only appeared in the 17th century. It comes from the ancient Greek words "μῖσος" (mīsos) - hatred and "γυνή" (gynḗ) - woman. This phenomenon manifests in various forms - from crude jokes to discrimination against women in professional and social life. While it could previously be attributed to certain cultural or religious prejudices, today, in an era of equal rights, misogyny is an indicator of much more complex social processes.

The history of misogyny

Misogyny, unfortunately, has a long history. In many cultures around the world, women were perceived as "inferior" or "weaker" beings. In ancient Greece, for example, philosophers like Aristotle considered women to be imperfect men, and in the Middle Ages, religion often portrayed women as sinners and sources of temptation. These ideas were so firmly entrenched in society that misogyny became part of the culture for centuries.
These views have mutated over time but have not disappeared. In the 20th century, women began to actively fight for their rights, and much changed. But even after women gained the right to vote, access to education, and equal opportunities in the workplace, misogyny found other, less obvious ways to exist. It did not disappear but merely "masked" itself in the form of familiar, sometimes even unnoticed stereotypes.

Misogyny in the modern world

Misogyny in modern society can appear as familiar, seemingly innocent things. For example, when a woman is not allowed to speak at a meeting, even though she is an expert on the topic. Or when her achievements are attributed to her appearance, suggesting that she succeeded because of her beauty rather than her intelligence or hard work. Often, misogyny can be heard in everyday life, in the form of derogatory jokes or phrases aimed at devaluing women.
This phenomenon is particularly evident on social media. For example, when successful women are criticized for their decisions or appearance. The internet, unfortunately, has become a place where misogyny manifests as hate, sexist comments, and cyberbullying. Women who publicly express their opinions often face aggression and insults simply because they are women.

How to recognize misogyny?

Misogyny can be both overt and covert. Here are a few examples of its manifestations:
Contempt or humiliation: this can take the form of open insults or crude jokes directed at women.
Stereotypes and prejudices: this is when women are attributed certain traits because of their gender, for example, claiming that women are "emotional," "cannot lead," or "are meant for domestic work."
Ignoring or denying the right to speak: when women are not listened to in work or social situations solely because of their gender.
Denying equal opportunities: when women are denied career opportunities or deliberately paid less because they are women.

Misogyny and culture

Culture also plays an important role in preserving and spreading misogyny. In films, books, songs, and shows, images of women are often used as weak, dependent, or existing only for the pleasure of men. This shapes the perception that women are "less important" or "meant for other roles." These ideas seep into our subconscious and become part of our thinking, even if we do not notice it.

Can misogyny be overcome?

Of course, it can. But to do so, it is necessary to constantly work on changing not only one's own thinking but also society as a whole. First of all, it is important to recognize the problem. Often, misogyny is so familiar that many do not even notice its manifestations. Talking about it, raising issues of equality, and respecting women's opinions and choices are the first steps towards change.
Education and raising awareness are key. Each of us can change the situation if we talk about it, ask questions, and demand equality. It is also important to support women who face discrimination rather than standing aside.
