The word "seiyuu" (声優) literally means "voice actor." Although many countries have voice actors, in Japan this profession has gained a special status. Seiyuu do not just read the lines of characters. That is why professional seiyuu train for years in acting skills, stage speech, vocal techniques, and voice work.

Many people mistakenly believe that seiyuu only work on anime. In fact, their field of activity is much broader. They voice characters in video games, radio dramas, audiobooks, commercials, mobile applications, and even navigation systems. Moreover, it is often seiyuu who dub foreign films and series for the Japanese market.

A special place in Japanese culture is held by so-called dramatic CDs and audio dramas. These are full-fledged performances without visual accompaniment, where the entire story is revealed only through the voices of the actors, music, and sound effects. For many seiyuu, such projects become a wonderful opportunity to showcase their skills.

Interestingly, many seiyuu simultaneously build a music career. Many of them perform songs for anime, release their own albums, and perform at large concert venues. In some cases, an actor's popularity can be so great that fans buy tickets to events primarily for their favorite voice, rather than for the anime itself.

In the Japanese industry, there are even special agencies and schools for training seiyuu. The competition in this field is extremely high. Every year, thousands of young people dream of landing their first role, but not everyone achieves success. Not only talent and a good voice are needed, but also immense diligence, the ability to quickly transform, and to work in various genres.

A separate phenomenon has emerged in the form of star seiyuu, whose voices are recognized by millions of people. Some actors have voiced iconic characters for decades and have essentially become an inseparable part of their image. For many fans, a change in the voice of their favorite character is perceived almost as painfully as a change of actor in a popular film.

With the development of anime and Japanese video games, the popularity of seiyuu began to extend far beyond Japan. Today, fans from all over the world know the names of their favorite voice actors, attend themed festivals, and follow new roles with as much attention as they do the works of directors or screenwriters.

Perhaps this is where the uniqueness of the seiyuu profession lies. Most viewers never see these people while watching their favorite series or games. However, it is they who give characters a voice, personality, and soul. Sometimes, just a few words are enough for a hero to remain in the memory of millions, and behind those words almost always stands the skill of a talented seiyuu.
