«Memories of the future» (Japanese). ⁇ IKemetcune, «Memories») – is a 1995 Japanese animated anthology film consisting of three separate short stories, each telling a unique story.
First novel – «Magnetic rose»
Back in 2092, a team of space cleaners receives a distress signal and discovers an abandoned rose-shaped station. Inside, they encounter the holographic memories of opera singer Eva Friedel, who cannot come to terms with her death.
It's not just a story about the future, it's a kind of gothic novel where emotions and memories are stronger than any technology. Watching her, I wondered how often we ourselves become hostages of the past, even if not as dramatically as Eva Friedel.
Second novel – «Stink Bomb»
This story, with elements of black humor, tells the story of chemist Nobuo Tanaka, who, trying to cure himself of the flu, takes an experimental pill. Suddenly, he begins to emit a deadly smell that kills all living things around. Unaware of the consequences, Nobuo heads to Tokyo, threatening the entire city.
I sincerely laughed at the absurdity of the situation, but then the thought came: does this story not symbolize human indifference to the consequences of one's actions? The whole world around is collapsing, but the hero does not even realize it.
Third novella – «Cannon meat»
This story takes us to a city where the lives of the inhabitants revolve around constant war. Residents load cannons and fire at an invisible enemy they have never seen every day. This dystopian account reflects the absurdity of war and blind submission to the system.
Yes, this series is almost 30 years old, but its themes are still relevant today. The animation, although created in the 90s, looks incredibly – detailed, lively, emotional. All three short stories – are a mix of fiction, drama and satire that hit right in the heart.
This series reminds me that good art is not statute-barred. On the contrary, time only adds weight to it, forcing it to be perceived more deeply and rethought. If you haven't seen «Memories of the future» yet, be sure to watch – is a journey worth every minute.
