It’s a bit cold outside. Approximately -20 C. At this time, my MacBook Air starts to freeze. Sometimes it happens that the laptop doesn’t turn on after a walk outside in the backpack. This used to happen with my first MacBook Air from 2014 (a case and other things don’t help keep it warm). Now the same story is happening with the MacBook Air 2020.

What are the operating temperatures for MacBook?
Storage: Recommended storage temperature is -20°C to 45°C.
Operating temperature: Recommended temperature is from 10°C to 35°C.
I returned to this issue the other day when the laptop had been lying all day in a room with an air temperature of ~ 15C and didn’t turn on. I never turn it off, I just close the lid. It didn’t respond to the power button press. At the moment of connecting the charger, the screen turned on for a second and then turned off again. The actual temperature of the MacBook was technically lower than the air temperature. But by how much - it’s unclear.
Solution to the MacBook freezing problem
It’s simple - warm it up. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But note that the warming should be gradual (stress from rapid heating can damage the laptop). Don’t place the device on heating appliances, etc. Ideally, it should just be in a warm room, warm air, etc.
You can also warm the MacBook with the lid open. This is necessary so that any potential condensation evaporates and doesn’t get inside.
Possible issues from MacBook freezing
From my own experience, I can say that you shouldn’t play loud music on the laptop right after it has warmed up and turned on. It seems (I’m not sure, maybe it’s just a coincidence) that this is why one speaker started to crackle. Only replacing it helped.
Also, keep in mind that the laptop will stop turning on in the frost. So, showing something quickly on the device somewhere on the road won’t work.
