A few years ago, 32 or 64 GB in a smartphone was enough for most users. However, the capabilities of gadgets are increasing, and so is the demand for resources. Manufacturers are offering phone models with huge memory capacities — up to 1 TB.
Is such a capacity really needed, or is it just a marketing ploy? After all, a terabyte of memory is currently only available for flagships, and for such storage, you have to pay at least $200 more.
Why is 1 TB a lot, but necessary?
Most modern smartphones have 256–512 GB, which is enough for photos, videos, apps, games, and chat and social media caches. However, there are people for whom the phone is a work tool. They need to record videos daily, upload large files, so the standard capacity is insufficient.
Regular users can store data in the cloud, but this is not always possible and convenient:
there is no fast internet;
important files need to be available "here and now";
the cloud has a limited amount of free storage.
In such cases, a large internal memory capacity becomes a necessity.
Who really needs a smartphone with 1 TB?
1. Videographers and photographers
Smartphones like iPhone 16 Pro Max support recording in Apple ProRes 4K 60fps format, which takes up 12–15 GB of memory per minute. If you actively shoot professional content, then 1 TB will be enough for about 2–3 hours of video. Since it's convenient to edit directly on the phone, a large memory capacity allows you to store projects without needing to transfer them to a computer.
2. Gamers
Modern mobile games "weigh" gigabytes. For example, Genshin Impact, along with updates and saved progress, requires 20+ GB, and some HD-graphic games with additional resources can take even more. Gamers who do not want to constantly delete old games will find that 1 TB of memory allows for a large library right on their smartphone.
3. Professionals working with large files
For designers, musicians, architects, and programmers, a smartphone with a large memory capacity allows them to store graphics, videos, audio tracks, 3D models, and code bases. This is especially important for those who use mobile versions of professional programs (Adobe Lightroom, AutoCAD, DaVinci Resolve).
4. Bloggers and travelers
Travel bloggers, influencers, and people who actively share their lives on social media store a huge amount of content on their smartphones: videos, photos, notes, drafts of posts. Cloud storage is not always convenient (during trips, in nature), so local memory allows for working with materials without the internet.
5. Users who do not want to rely on the cloud
Despite the popularity of cloud services, many people prefer to store data locally. This may be due to privacy concerns, access speed, or the desire to have all files at hand even without the internet.
Is it worth buying a smartphone with 1 TB?
If you do not actively use your smartphone for shooting, editing, or storing "heavy" files, then 256–512 GB will be enough. At the same time, for bloggers, gamers, or people who want maximum memory capacity, 1 TB is a practical solution.
Before choosing a model with such storage capacity, it is worth assessing your own needs: if you regularly encounter a lack of space, a terabyte will solve this problem.
