While watching a British series Deer (Baby Reindeer) in the original language with Ukrainian subtitles, my attention was drawn to a phrase translated as “suspended tongue”. It became interesting what the actress said in the original. Her English moments were not very legible for me. And in my vocabulary, I could not find words that could be translated as a suspended language.
After rewinding and turning on the English subtitles (it's good that this functionality is quite convenient on Netflix), I read and heard the line of the heroine: You've got a silver tongue on you, you do, devil boy. From which I conclude that silver tongue is a suspended tongue.
This phrase is an idiom both in Ukrainian and in English (here has already written more about this term). That is, it describes the trait of a person who knows how to speak beautifully and convincingly, enchants listeners with skillfully selected words.
In addition to the so-called “silver tongue”, there are other expressions in English that are similar in meaning:
"Gift of the gab" - means the ability to speak well, especially convincingly or eloquently. He has the gift of the gab - he can talk his way out of anything!
"Smooth talker" - a person who speaks easily, confidently and convincingly, often for manipulation.Be careful, he's a smooth talker and might trick you into agreeing.
Finally, I still want to recommend the Deer series if someone has not seen it yet. There are few series, they are short. The plot is based on the real experience of the author, who plays the main role. It has everything - drama, thriller notes, black humor. Fresh and interesting! The only downside for those who do not like to watch content with subtitles is that there is still no Ukrainian voiceover on Netflix.
