The official website of the new anime The Ghost in the Shell by Science SARU has released the third trailer and confirmed the series premiere date — July 7, 2026.
Along with the video, the third key visual featuring members of Public Security Section 9 was also revealed. It was illustrated by Nao Naito, who is working on the title as chief animation director alongside Shuhei Handa.
Premiere at the Annecy Festival
The world premiere of The Ghost in the Shell will take place at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in Annecy, France. The festival will run from June 21 to 27, 2026.
As part of the Special Events program, the first two episodes titled “Dive into 'THE GHOST IN THE SHELL'” will be shown. Members of the creative team will also take the stage — director Mokochan, producers Kohei Sakita, Kengo Abe, and Daichi Sasa, to discuss the production of the series.
What is known about the team and the plot
Mokochan, who previously worked as an assistant director on DAN DA DAN, has become the director of the new series based on the classic manga by Masamune Shirow. The series composition and script are handled by Toh Enjoe (Godzilla Singular Point), with character design and chief animation direction by Shuhei Handa (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off).
The music is composed by Taisei Iwasaki (Metallic Rouge), Ryo Konishi, and YUKI KANESAKA (Dr. STONE). The series will be released on Prime Video.
The events unfold in 2029 in a near-future where Japan lives in an extremely technologized world with a vast corporate network. Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg with a fully mechanical body, leads an elite team alongside Batou. During operations, they encounter cyber crimes, international conspiracies, and follow the trail of a mysterious hacker known as Puppet Master.
