Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that starting January 2028, it will cease production of physical discs for all new games that will be released on PlayStation consoles.

After this date, new titles will be available in the PlayStation Store and at retail only in digital format. This will not affect games that have already been released or will be released on discs before January 2028.

The company explains this as a natural step in response to changing player preferences and the overall movement of the industry from physical media to digital media. Sony noted that they want to better align with how most of the community today purchases and launches games.

The company also stated that it will continue to focus resources on new ways to access games and will maintain choice for consumers — through retail or the PlayStation Store.
