Random is a chance or the result of a random choice, when it is not known in advance what exactly will happen or which option will be chosen. The word comes from the English random and is especially common on the internet, in computer games, and in colloquial speech.

For example, if a winner is randomly chosen from a list of participants, the result can be called random. If a game randomly determines which item will drop after defeating an opponent, that is also random.

However, in modern slang, the meaning of the word has become somewhat broader. "Random" can refer not only to something that was literally determined by chance but also to something unexpected, seemingly out of nowhere, or not connected to the previous context at all.

The history of the English random is interesting in that it originally did not mean "random" in the modern sense.

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the English word is related to the Middle English randon, randoun and Old French randon, which conveyed the meaning of swift movement, impulse, pressure, or unrestrainedness. The English expression at random in the 16th century initially meant movement "at great speed," and later began to mean action without a clear direction or plan. By the 17th century, random was already used in a meaning close to the modern one — "without a defined purpose or pattern."

Today, one of the main meanings of random is that which does not have a predetermined plan, goal, or scheme. In statistics and mathematics, the word has more precise meanings related to probability and random selection.

The term "random" entered Ukrainian colloquial language along with English digital vocabulary. The word has particularly taken root in gamer and internet slang, where it is often necessary to talk about random choice, generation, and unpredictable results.

In everyday speech, "random" has long gone beyond the literal meaning of "chance."

For example, the phrase "some random guy wrote to me in direct" usually does not mean that this guy was randomly chosen among others. "Random" here is closer to "some stranger," "taken from nowhere," or "someone you didn't expect to see at all."

Similarly, one can say:

"He randomly changed the topic" — unexpectedly, without an obvious reason;

"Some random video appeared in the recommendations" — a video that seems completely unrelated to others;

"We'll choose the winner randomly" — by chance;

"That was just random" — the result was determined by chance, not a thoughtful decision.

Because of this, the specific Ukrainian equivalent depends on the context. A random number — random, to choose randomly — to choose at random, a random meeting — chance, and "a random dude from the internet" — rather some stranger.

In computer games, the concept of randomness is particularly important. The game can randomly determine the items a character receives, cards in a deck, the placement of objects, equipment characteristics, the appearance of opponents, or other events.

For this, the abbreviation RNG — Random Number Generator is often used, meaning a random number generator.

That is why players might say "lucky with the random" or, conversely, complain about "bad random." This refers to situations where the outcome depended not only on the player's skills or decisions but also on a random component.

In computers, such randomness is often created using pseudorandom generators. These are algorithms that generate sequences that appear random based on an initial value. At the same time, there are also systems that obtain random data from physical sources, so the claim that any computer random is merely "fake randomness" would be overly simplistic.

In colloquial language, "random" is sometimes used almost synonymously with the words "chaotic," "strange," or "absurd." However, these are not entirely the same concepts.

Random implies chance: the result was not predetermined or the choice was made without a specific plan.

Chaos describes disorder, complexity, or a lack of obvious order.

For example, ten books can be neatly arranged on a shelf, but their order can be determined by random drawing. The result will be random, although the shelf itself will not look chaotic at all.

Conversely, the disorder on a desk may have a completely understandable reason and not be the result of a random process.

In most situations, there are. Depending on the context, one can say chance, randomly, random, at random, arbitrarily.

"Choose randomly" — choose at random.

"Random number" — random number.

"Complete random" — complete chance.

However, in slang constructions, a direct translation does not always sound as natural. "A random person from the internet" may simply mean an unfamiliar, outsider, or someone taken from nowhere. Here, the word conveys not only randomness but also a certain sense of surprise and lack of connection to the context.

It is this flexibility that has helped "random" take root in internet language. The word can describe both mathematical randomness and the mechanics of a computer game, as well as a situation where an algorithm suddenly showed you a video about alpaca breeding after an hour of watching smartphone reviews.
