Skyscraper — a tall building for residential, office, or administrative purposes
The skyscraper symbolized and still symbolizes progress, development, and humanity's victory over its natural limitations
There are no universally recognized criteria that define a skyscraper.
The minimum height of a skyscraper ranges from 100 to 150 m.
The number of floors and the exterior appearance also influence the definition of a skyscraper: a skyscraper is often associated with the outer part of the building being covered in glass.
The definition of a skyscraper is constantly changing
In the 19th century, skyscrapers referred to buildings with 6 floors, and the concept of "skyscraper" was more related to steel-frame construction technology than height.
Now it sometimes depends on the country of location:
if a 15-story building is the tallest structure in the country, it may be called a skyscraper.
The term "skyscraper" began to be used in the 1880s in the USA.
Why has it become possible to build skyscrapers?
1. Technologies have allowed the construction of residential and office buildings with six or more floors. Previously, there were issues with water supply at such heights;
2. The invention of elevators also influenced these processes.

This photograph was taken around 1890, showing the building at its peak. The 10-story building was the tallest building in the world at that time and was considered a magnificent example of architecture and engineering.
The Home Insurance Building was designed by William Le Baron Jenney, who is considered the "father of the skyscraper." Jenney used innovative steel frame construction to create a building that was significantly stronger and taller than any other building constructed up to that time.
The Home Insurance Building was demolished in 1931 to make way for a new office building. However, the building remains an important milestone in the history of architecture and continues to inspire architects and engineers around the world.
Skyscraper builders required special fearlessness, agility, and even adventurousness, as people worked at great heights without safety measures

The construction of the complex was completed in 2012, and it consists of a 47-story residential building and an 18-story office center.
During Soviet times, Kyiv Pechersk Lavra was a marker for height in Kyiv — no buildings could be taller than it (for example, the height of the "Motherland" monument was reduced to comply with this rule).
For instance, in Washington, buildings cannot be taller than the Capitol.
The general plan for Kyiv stipulated that the height of new buildings in the historical central zone could not exceed 27 m, but this was not adhered to.
Currently, in the new General Plan, about a hundred such buildings are listed as disharmonious.
Such buildings are subject to complete or partial demolition or visual neutralization.
