Baileys liqueur is one of the most popular alcoholic beverages in the world. It is produced in Ireland. This liqueur impresses with its original composition and taste. It consists of Irish whiskey and natural cream. This unusual mix offers a gentle sweet flavor with bright hints of vanilla, sugar, and cream.
Features of the liqueur
The first Baileys went on sale in 1974. Developing its recipe took four years. The idea of creating a liqueur with whiskey and cream came to David Dempsey – one of the executives at Gilbeys of Ireland. The first drink was prepared in a regular kitchen blender. But the experiment was not successful. The cream soured, the drink separated into layers, and turned into a mass of unclear consistency. But Dempsey and his colleagues did not give up. And they managed to create a truly unique product.
The drink's strength is 17% ABV, making it a great choice for celebrations and friendly gatherings. The liqueur is characterized by its sweet taste. Another distinctive feature of Baileys is its original black bottle, which is hard to miss on store shelves.
Varieties of Baileys liqueur
The manufacturer offers several varieties:
- Original – the first liqueur created by the brand. It contains exclusively Irish components: whiskey, cream, sugar, chocolate, caramel.
- Mint Chocolate – the main role belongs to the chocolate note, complemented by mint.
- Cream Coffee – a coffee liqueur with cream and whiskey. It resembles classic Irish coffee.
- Creme Caramel – the flavor is dominated by caramel, as the name suggests. It might seem that this would make the drink too sweet. But the taste turned out to be balanced in the best traditions of Baileys.
- Hazelnut – the manufacturer decided not to stop and continued to expand the line of drinks. In this mix, the nut dominates. It provides a rich aroma and pleasant aftertaste.
- Strawberries & Cream – a bold experiment with the addition of berries. The taste features strawberries with cream. This can be called a universal combination. The aroma reveals notes of wild strawberries. After tasting, a pleasant tartness remains.
The recipes for all liqueurs are kept secret. It is known that each drink contains whiskey and cream. The alcohol prevents the dairy product from souring. It is added at the final stage of preparing the mix.
How to properly drink Baileys liqueur
Sweet alcohol should be served as a digestif, that is, after the main meal. The liqueur does not need to be pre-chilled. The ideal serving temperature is 18-20 degrees. The drink is poured into special liqueur glasses. The liqueur should be sipped slowly, enjoying each sip.
Dessert alcohol can be consumed neat. It can also be mixed with coffee, hot chocolate, and milkshakes. Baileys is used to prepare cocktails. It pairs well with vodka, gin, whiskey, and rum. At the same time, one should avoid sweet carbonated drinks and juices.
