The term comes from the English phrase brain rot: brain means "brain," and rot means "decay" or "decomposition." The literal translation is "brain decay", however, in the Ukrainian internet, the adapted form "brain rot" is used much more frequently.

The word can already be found in Ukrainian videos, posts, comments, announcements, and titles of gaming content. It is also declined: brain rots, brain rot, brain rots, brain rot's.

The meaning of the word depends on the context. Most often, brain rot refers to content that seems deliberately silly, chaotic, or meaningless.

This can include short videos with strange editing, loud sounds, disordered phrases, repeated jokes, and characters whose existence cannot be explained by any logic. Such a video may tell nothing and have no understandable plot, yet you still want to finish watching it, share it with friends, or watch it again.

The word brain rot also describes the feeling after prolonged scrolling through TikTok, Reels, YouTube Shorts, or other endless feeds.

When a person switches between short videos, memes, snippets of series, and random facts for several hours, they may find it difficult to focus on something longer. Hence the phrases:

— After two hours of shorts, I already have brain rot.— I need to put my phone down because my brain can’t process information anymore.— I scrolled through the feed for so long that I don’t remember why I opened the app.

In this sense, brain rot is an exaggerated and self-ironic metaphor. It is not a medical diagnosis or literal "brain decay." The word simply conveys a feeling of information overload, distraction, or fatigue from excessive amounts of fast content.

In 2024, Oxford University Press chose brain rot as the word of the year. The term became popular amid discussions about endless scrolling, short videos, and the impact of low-quality digital content on the ability to concentrate.

In fan communities, the word can have a completely different connotation. Here, brain rot means a strong, almost obsessive fascination with a series, anime, game, musician, character, or fictional world.

When a person says that a certain character has become their "new brain rot," it means they constantly think about them, watch videos, read theories, search for fan art, and revisit favorite scenes.

For example:

— After the finale, I started having brain rot over this series.— This character is my new brain rot.— I’ve been listening to the same song for a week; it has completely settled in my head.

In this context, the word does not necessarily have a negative meaning. Rather, it humorously describes a topic that has temporarily captivated all of a person's thoughts.

A new meaning of the word spread thanks to the trend Italian Brainrot, or "Italian brain rot." This is a series of absurd characters, many of which were created using generative artificial intelligence.

In these characters, animals are combined with airplanes, sneakers, cups, fruits, weapons, and other random items. They have rhymed pseudo-Italian names, strange voices, and even stranger fictional stories.

Among the most well-known examples are Tralalero Tralala, Bombardino Crocodilo, and Ballerina Cappuccino.

Initially, the term brain rot referred to the format of such videos, but over time, brain rots began to refer to individual characters as well. Thus, phrases arose:

— to collect brain rots;— to exchange brain rots;— to get a new brain rot;— to steal a rare brain rot.

This meaning became particularly widespread after the popularity of the Roblox game Steal a Brainrot, which revolves around collecting and stealing meme characters.

Therefore, the phrases "this is a brain rot" and "this is a brain rot character" can mean different things. In the first case, it refers to nonsensical content, while in the second — to a specific character from modern absurd memes.

In English, the traditional form is brain rot — two separate words. The spelling brainrot is often used in hashtags, trend names, games, and fan discussions.

In the Ukrainian-speaking internet, the most common form is брейнрот written together. This is the form that looks most natural in sentences:

The variant "brain decay" conveys the literal meaning of the English term but is usually only used as an explanation. In live internet communication, users mostly stick to the word "брейнрот".

The spelling "брейн рот" separately also occurs, but it is still less common and does not align as well with how the borrowing functions in Ukrainian sentences.

AI slop refers to mass-produced low-quality content created using generative artificial intelligence. This can include images, texts, music, or videos that are produced in large quantities for views and to fill feeds.

Brain rot is a broader and less precise concept. It refers to the absurd content itself, the state after prolonged viewing of it, a strong fascination with a particular topic, or characters from modern memes.

For example, a video featuring a strange AI-generated animal can simultaneously be AI slop due to the production method, shitposting due to its deliberate absurdity, and brain rot due to its absurd content and obsessive popularity.

Thus, the exact meaning of the word can only be determined from the context. Brain rot can be a meaningless video, fatigue from endless scrolling, a strong fan obsession, or a strange meme character.
