Sanxian (sanxian) is a string musical instrument popular in China. It has three strings. The name "sanxian" means "three strings" in Chinese. The resonant body of the instrument is usually covered with snake skin. The strings are tuned using pegs at the top of the instrument. Playing the sanxian is done with a plectrum. Sanxian is used in various musical styles, including folk music and contemporary popular music. This instrument served as the basis for sanshin in Okinawa, which was later adapted and transformed into shamisen in Japan.
