R20 and LR20 batteries are designations for the same size batteries (size - D). The main difference between them lies in the chemical composition (other indicators also depend on this)
The R20 and LR20 are standard size D. Usually D-type batteries are zinc-carbon (R) or alkaline (LR). Often used in a variety of electronic devices such as lights, radios, toys, gas speakers, etc.
R20 or LR20 batteries for a gas column?
The question of the difference between R20 and LR20 arose when it was necessary to replace the power element in the gas column. In the instructions - LR20, and the store has R20 available. As we have already found out - the difference in chemical composition, and the size is the same. So I replaced the LR20 1.5V with the R20 1.5V (the voltage is the same) because the LR20 was not available, and the column should be used. But next time you need to order LR20 for several reasons (read below).
Why do you need to use LR20 batteries for a gas column?
It is recommended to use for gas columns alkaline batteries LR20, not zinc-carbon R20, for several reasons:
Larger capacity: LR20 alkaline batteries have a significantly larger capacity (12,000–18,000 mAh) compared to zinc-carbon R20s (about 8,000 mAh). This means that they provide longer operating times, which is important for the continuous operation of gas columns.
High load resistance: Gas columns can consume a significant amount of energy when activated, especially for electronic igniters. LR20 alkaline batteries do better at such peak loads due to their chemical properties, while R20s can lose efficiency quickly.
Better performance at low temperatures: Alkaline batteries work better at low temperatures, which is important if the gas column is installed in unheated rooms.
Longer shelf life: Alkaline batteries have a longer shelf life and are less prone to self-discharge, so they can be used for longer periods without replacement, making them a more reliable option for devices like gas columns.
R20 can be used, if LR20 is not available. But they will work less time.
By the way, from my own experience I can say that the presence of a battery charge indicator on a gas column is a useful thing. On almost completely discharged batteries - the electronics of the column behave strangely.
In the photo below, you can see that Alcaline duracels (alkaline) and Zinc-Carbon (zinc-carbon) are worth it
