SteamOS is an operating system developed by Valve Corporation. It was introduced in 2013 as part of Valve's initiative to bring PC gaming to the living room through the concept of Steam Machines.  SteamOS is an open source operating system built on Debian Linux. It is optimized for gaming on the big screen and uses Valve's own Big Picture Mode interface. While SteamOS can run Linux versions of games available on Steam, it also supports game streaming technology from another Windows computer. The Steam Machines initiative did not gain widespread adoption.
