For DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations, a free update 4 is being prepared, which will be released on July 7 along with the game. On that day, players on PlayStation 5 Pro will gain access to the updated version of PSSR — PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.
This refers to an improved image reconstruction technology that was already deployed on the PS5 Pro earlier this year. At PlayStation, they say it allows for an immediately clearer picture on the platform.
How PSSR works in DOOM: The Dark Ages
In a game where the Doom Slayer is constantly moving, sharply turning, blocking attacks, using the Shield-Saw, and flooding the screen with effects, image stability becomes crucial. PSSR uses machine learning to restore a higher quality image from a frame rendered by idTech8, taking into account motion, depth, exposure, and subpixel sampling.
In practice, this means a cleaner image in motion. Fine details — snow, stone debris, chains, spikes, sparks, and thin geometry — are supposed to remain more stable, without the excessive flickering that sometimes appears in traditional temporal upscaling.
What exactly is improved on PS5 Pro
PlayStation emphasizes that PSSR works particularly well in large combat arenas, where there are many effects, enemies, and fine details on the screen at the same time. As a result, distant opponents and the edges of the environment remain more readable, while weapons and characters in close-ups look sharper.
DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations is coming out on July 7 on PlayStation 5, and PSSR support will only be available on PlayStation 5 Pro.
